Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands

The Forgotten Sands manages to add a few surprises along with its time-manipulation shtick; at some point in the game, The Prince gains the ability to freeze streams of water, and later, to restore chunks of missing masonry to his decaying environment -- albeit one chunk at a time. The game steadily adds more and more complexity to its obstacle courses in a straightforward progression that soon escalates to complicated actions like unfreezing and refreezing platform-producing jets of water and/or making vital precipices disappear and reappear in the same jump. But, outside from a few sections in the end that just feel untested, The Forgotten Sands always makes its platforming intentions straightforward -- and the camera tends to nudge you in the right direction, so getting lost is nearly impossible.

Also in the tradition of Sands of Time, combat is The Forgotten Sands' low point; though the battles never get quite as tedious as they do in Sands, fighting hordes of enemies comes off as nothing but needless padding in an otherwise focused game. This time around, the Prince has an assortment of special moves -- unlocked by earning experience from defeated enemies -- mostly for the sake of making combat pass by much faster, but even equipped with these crowd-clearing techniques, fighting yet another roomful of skeletons comes off as nothing but mostly-mindless busywork. Shaving combat from The Forgotten Sands would have made this eight-hour adventure even shorter, but it's doubtful that anyone would miss a few hours of button-mashing through a meager variety of monsters.

Ultimately, The Forgotten Sands feels like an HD remake of the original Sands of Time; and having played both, I can safely say that Ubisoft's latest installment in the franchise definitely benefits from seven years of gaming evolution. But, in the same sense, there's very little new going on here, and the Forgotten Sands never strays far from the same water that Sands of Time treaded back in 2003. It's a fantastic installment for newcomers to the Prince of Persia series, but those who've been Persia fans since Sands of Time may find The Forgotten Sands mildly forgettable.
